Lee Family Book
By Walter Warnick
This is the official Dudley Lee Genealogy, written by me, Walter Warnick, and edited my be and my grandchildren, Gregory Wilson and Joseph Frommer, with additional help from Jeff Sarver. This edition of the book is currently undergoing considerable revision and addition. While the information is reliable, there is much that needs to be added. This is a gradual process, and will be occurring over the next few months. This book will be transitioning from a digital book to a much more interactive wiki, with a visual, interactive family tree, updated images, links to other sources, and other features that will increase ease of use and usefulness of information. If you have any suggestions, such as revisions, additions, or edits, please email waltwarnickfamilyhistorypages@gmail.com
If you are a descendant of Dudley Lee, and your family line is not in this book, please email this address so that we can get you and your family into the book. Thank you!
Notes: The gaps in page numbers is due to the removal of outdated images. The numbers remain what they are for index purposes

Preface
The writer has found it very interesting to learn about his ancestors, especially one in particular, Dudley Lee. He was a veteran of the Revolutionary War and a pioneer in Garrett County, Maryland. This book is about Dudley and his descendants.
The primary service the author has rendered is to collect, organize, and permanently record information obtained from the personal records and research of his cousins.
Much information on descendants of Dudley Lee was furnished by Ethel Fike Friend. Dorothy Lee Jones wrote Chapter X and contributed much information presented in other chapters. The books, "Genealogy of the Harvey Family of Garrett County, Maryland' and "Genealogy of the Moon Family of Garrett County, Maryland”, both by Marshall G. Brown gives the descendants and ancestry of many of the people listed in this genealogy. In a few instances where Brown has information on modern descendants of Dudley Lee, the reader has been referred to his books. Brown's books are in many libraries, including the Ruth Enlow Library In Oakland, Maryland. Others have also made contributions. They are listed on page 125.
This book is organized in the following manner. Chapter I consists of a discussion on the immediate family of Dudley Lee, the first Lee of Garrett County. The next eight chapters are dedicated to each of Dudley's children about whom some information has been obtained.Chapter X regards Nicholas J. Lee, a grandson of Dudley Lee.
The numbering system begins with the children of Dudley Lee, each of whom have been assigned a number corresponding to the order of his birth. For example, Dudley Lee's fifth child, Frederick, is assigned the number 5. In turn Frederick Lee's children take his number 5 followed by the number corresponding to the order of their birth. For example, Frederick Lee's sixth child, George Smith Lee, is assigned the number 5.6. Descendants of George Smith Lee are assigned additional digits in a similar manner. Should more information be gathered later on, for overlooked descendants of Dudley Lee, the genealogy can be revised to include them without reassigning new numbers to those descendants already accounted for. Another advantage is that the complete Lee lineage of each descendant of Dudley Lee is recorded in that descendant's assigned number.
This genealogy only begins to list the descendants of Dudley Lee, who may have had as many as 19 or 20 children. A more complete genealogy would probably include 10 times the number of descendants named here. The author of this book invites the reader to send any additional information that may be included in future editions of this genealogy. In addition, any information on the early Lee 's would be of special interest. Send information to waltwarnickfamilyhistorypages@gmail.com or 2755 Meander Creek Lane, Haymarket, VA, 20169.

The Dudley Lee Family
Information on Dudley Lee (1759-4/10/1815) was recorded in the 2/11/1937 edition of the Mountain Democrat. It is repeated below in its entirety.
Garrett County History of Pioneer Families
By Chas. E. Hoye
The Dudley Lee Family
The Lee Family was one of the earliest settled in this County, its ancestor, Dudley Lee being listed in Ryans Glade, then in Allegany County in the census of 1800, as head of a family of ten and one slave; two of his neighbors at that time were Henry White and John Irons. He settled what was known later as the Noah Harvey farm near the White Church, where he died April 10, 1815, and was buried on his farm, northeast of his pioneer log house.
Dudley Lee was born in Ireland, when about eleven years of age he stowed himself away on a ship, or was kidnapped and taken aboard. When the vessel arrived at Baltimore the Captain "sold" him (bound him) to serve seven years to pay his passage to America. After his term of service young Dudley married Senorita Judith Guevarra, a Spanish or Portuguese lady of Baltimore, who died while still a young woman.
It appears that about the time of the American Revolution Dudley Lee settled in Frederick Co, MD, where in the census of 1790 he was listed with his wife and three sons. In 1798 or 1799 he moved to Ryans Glade. In Frederick County he married Margaret Fetters, then the widow White and already the mother of four children; perhaps this connection with the White family led Dudley Lee to settle in Ryan's Glade, a neighbor of the pioneer Henry White. She is buried in the Beach Run, Preston County, WV Cemetery, her tombstone bears the inscription: "Margaret Fetters Lee 1772-1839 wife of Dudley Lee a soldier in the Revolution 1776-1780." (Tombstone was erected by Christopher Columbus Lee).

Lee's in the Revolution

There appears to have been two Dudley Lees in the Revolutionary Army from Maryland.
One Dudley Lee of Anne Arundel County, Maryland served in the 3d Md Regt, and died in 1791. Our Dudley Lee was awarded Military Lot No. 301 in Glade, but in 1797, for $25, he deeded it to James Reid. Lee was then "of Frederick County" and his wife was “Judy" Lee.
Dudley Lee, private, Sixth Maryland Regiment, enlisted July 1, 1778 and was discharged April 1, 1779. He reenlisted in Captain Williams Company of Frederick Co. He also served other terms until Aug, 10, 1784,
In 1811 Dudley Lee was granted a small pension by his State, and, very tardily, in 1838, his widow was also pensioned "half, pay of a private during her life."

The Lee Children
Dudley Lee is said to have been the father of nineteen children, some of whom were,
-
Jacob, who married Eva Moon in 1815.
-
Lemiel (or Levi) married Mary Ling, 1816.
-
John married Rebecca Irons, 1818.
-
Dudley married Luncinda White, 1822.
-
Frederick married Sarah Arnold, 1823. â ‚
-
Nicholas married Frances King.
-
William married Mary Fursher, 1825.
-
Margaret married John P. Gray.
-
Judith married James Tichnell.
-
Katherine married Michael Sypolt.
-
Sallie married James Strahan.
-
Rebecca (1814—1898) Unmarried.
-
(Author's note: The Rev. William Welch listed marriages that he performed from 1816-1867. One of these was the marriage of Fred Lee to Sarah Irons on 12/28/1823. Another record shows Frederick Lee married Sarah Arnold, 9/13/1823. The brevity of the purported marriage to Arnold and the fact that these wives had the same first names and similar ending last names makes the accuracy of this information appear questionable.)
Jacob Lee, son of Dudley I, was a soldier during the war of 1812. He resided near Red House. His children were Jacob, Rebecca, Robert and Sarah E. His son, Robert Lee (1814 -1899) married Christina Waltz, and their children were William P., George D., Andrew J., and Yantz. William P. Lee was Sheriff of Garrett County.
Nicholas Lee, son of Dudley I, was born in 1803 and died in 1888. He settled in Preston Co, WV and is buried at the Oak Grove Church. Nicholas enlisted in the Union Army at the age of fifty-nine and served until the close of the Civil War. One of his sons was Capt. C. C. Lee (1840-1932), who enlisted as a private, served through the war and was mustered out as the Captain of his Company. Capt Lee was twice wounded in the service. He is buried at Oak Grove. Around 1983, Margaret Lee Groves, the sister of Capt. C. C. Lee lived at Oak Grove.
Frederick Lee, son of Dudley I, settled in Ryans Glade. His children were George, John Wesley, Abraham, Henry, Julia, Rebecca, Sarah Jane, Elizabeth, Nancy. John Lee served in the 6th W. Va. Regiment. He had eleven children, one of whom is Guavara J. Lee of Gorman.
Margaret Lee (1808-1864), daughter of Dudley I married John P. Gray and settled in Tucker Co., WV. Their children were Margaret C. (Dumire), Mary G. (Kaler), Martha (Sell), Minnie, Joseph, Ward. NinaLee Miller of Martinsburg, WV. is a daughter of Margaret C. Dumire.

Lee’s in the Wars
Fighting Irish blood in their veins, the Lees have served America in all its wars: Dudley Lee in the Revolution; two of his sons in 1812; two others with Gen. Taylor in Mexico; one son and many grandsons in our Civil War; a great-grandson was killed in the Spanish War and another served with the 2nd W, Va. Vil. Inf. in the same conflict.
The Year Without Summer
One of the stories Nicholas Lee used to tell his grandchildren, was of the year 1816, when Nicholas was a lad of thirteen, This was known as “the year with no summer.” Frosts ruined the crops and the Lee family in Ryans Glade raised little but cabbage. The eighteen
members of the family had only one thin slice of bread per day each, and they shot and trapped wild animals for meat.
Hansel Taylor of Oak Grove near Terra Alta, has a photograph of the veteran Nicholas, taken when he was about 80 years of age.

* The Garrett County History of Pioneer Families by Charles E. Hoye has given some information on the families of Jacob, Frederick, Nicholas and Margaret.
** The Rev. William Welch listed marriages that he performed from 1816-1867.
One of these was the marriage of Fred Lee to Sarah Irons on 12/28/1823. Another record shows Frederick Lee married Sarah Arnold, 9/13/1823. The brief duration of this period and the fact that these marriages showed the same first names and similar sounding last names, makes the accuracy of this information appear questionable.
*** The order of births is not well established.
Page 7
An application to the Daughters of the American Revolution in 1936 lists the children of Dudley Lee and Margaret Fetters as follows:
Name Dates of Birth To whom married (noted if more than one)
Levi Dec 24, 1792 Died in Infancy
Sallie May 20, 1794 Married James Strahan
Dudley Jun 10, 1796 Married Lucinda White
John Sep 18, 1797 Married Rebecca Irons
Frederick Jul 21, 1800 Married Sarah Arnold
Nicholas May 7, 1803 Married Francis King
Judith Oct 16,1805 Married James Titchnell
Margaret Apr 17, 1808 Married John P. Gray
Katherine Aug 2, 1812 Married Michael Sypolt
Rebecca Dec 15, 1814 Spinster
Although this application lists dates of birth, I believe the information is flawed because it conflicts with the following information whose credibility is high.
(1) Deed records show Judith Guevarra involved with Dudley Lee in the sale of land in 1797, but the DAR application shows Dudley married to Margaret Fetters in 1792. It seems improbable that Dudley and Judith would be involved in a land transaction five years after Dudley took a new wife.
(2) Also, we know that Guevarra Lee, designated 5.8.3 in our genealogy, born in 1859, was the grandson of Frederick Lee and Frederick was still living when Guevarra was born. It seems most improbable that Guevarra Lee's father would have named his son after the maiden name of grandfather Dudley's first wife if she were in fact unrelated by blood. It seems much more plausible that Guevarra was given the name of Frederick's natural mother.
(3) Census Records show that Dudley Lee Il was 50 years old in 1850 and 60 years old in 1860, which would indicate that he was born in 1800 and not 1796.
(4) The DAR application does not indicate that Dudley Lee was married twice.
The discrepancies and omissions show the DAR application to be more questionable than the records of Ethel Fike Friend.
Page 8
The following is from information that was furnished by Dorothy Lee Jones of New Carrollton, Maryland:
Ethel Fike Friend wrote me a story of Dudley Lee that was supposed to have been handed down from Margaret Lee Groves, daughter of Nicholas of Dudley. She related the story of Dudley and his brother who ran away from their home in Ireland as a result of a fault committed by Dudley. To escape his father's harsh punishment they made their way to the nearest seaport. By the time Dudley's father found them, it was too late as Dudley had already bound himself to the ship's captain to pay his passage to the new world. Thus, he was sold by the ship 's captain to some plantation owner upon his (or their) arrival in Baltimore. Dudley and his brother also served in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War but his name does not come down to us.
According to the DAR Lineage Records, Dudley Lee was born in Belfast, Ireland May 15, 1759 and died April 10, 1815 in Allegany (now Garrett) County.
The 1790 Census lists Dudley and family in the section containing names of people living in Taneytown, in Frederick (now Carroll) County. There was no indication that he owned land.
The first inhabitants of Taneytown were Indians. The Tuscarora tribe hunted in the abundant woods. Many Indian relics have been found there. Disputes over the boundary lines of Maryland and Pennsylvania provinces were constant until the King of England sent two surveyors from England to America. Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon. In 1767 the Mason-Dixon line was drawn. (Francis Scott Key was born 5 miles from Taneytown). Taneytown was an established community when the first shots of the Revolutionary War were fired.
The "Archives of Maryland XVII Muster Rolls and Other Records of Services of Maryland Troops in the American Revolution 1775-1783" printed by the Maryland Historical Society in 1900 lists Dudley Lee as a soldier in the Revolution from July 1, 1778 to July 10, 1784. Dudley's service is also listed in "Revolutionary War Records, Volume 1 Pay Accounts Book.” The Historical Society lists Dudley Lee on June 6, 1778 as a class 1 substitute from Capt. Watson’s company in Col. Burce’s Battalion transferred to Col. Williams's regiment for nine months. Watson's Company was raised around Taneytown. Our Dudley Lee served in the 6th Md. Regt. and the 1st Md. Regt. of the Continental Line. At no time are there two Dudley Lees listed for a specific period. *
In April 1787, the Maryland Legislature authorized the Governor to lay out the vacant land belonging to the State, west of Fort Cumberland in lots of 50 acres. In November 1788, the Legislature decided the officers would get four lots, and privates would get one. Of the 4,000 lots surveyed in 1787, only 2,575 were actually allotted to veterans. Most of the veterans sold their lots at once. These plots were sold for an average of twelve dollars.
*(Author’s note: Charles E. Hoye contended two Dudley Lees from Maryland served in the Revolutionary War.)
Page 9
The 1790 census lists Dudley Lee as the head of a household with a wife and 3 males under 16 years of age.
October 20, 1791 Dudley Lee of Frederick County, Maryland sold the
Military Lot #301 awarded to him. The lot was sold to Jacob Clabaugh of Frederick County, Maryland for 30 pounds. Judith, wife of Dudley Lee, consented to the sale. Recorded in Deed Book A, Page 129 in Allegany County, Maryland.
In Frederick County, the estate of Hugh Kerr on March 29, 1793 lists in the Administrative Accounts (6ML p 458) a payment of a debt to Lee.
November 5, 1797 Dudley Lee sold Military Lot # 301 to Jarnes Reid for 25 pounds. Lee lived in Frederick County and his wife was Judy Lee, As recorded in Deed Book B, p. 422, Allegany County, Maryland.
Strange that he sold the land twice! Stranger still, that it is recorded in Allegany County in Deed Book 8, Pages 757, 758 and 759 in 1852 that this same Military Lot #301 was sold to John V. Emich by Isaac McNichols and his wife, Mary. McNichols had been declared the only surviving relative, a nephew, of Dudley Lee of the Revolution by the Orphans Court in Anne Arundel County on March 5, 1850. It was stated this Dudley Lee died in Anne Arundel County in 1791.. .which I have not checked...but the land description, deed and bounty warrant were all for Military Lot, #301.
And this same Isaac McNichols and his wife Mary claimed the Bounty Land of Military Lot 284 as the only surviving relative (a nephew) of William Lee. Lee was said to have been a regular soldier in the Revolutionary Army of the United States attached to the fourth Regiment of the Maryland Line and served under the command of General William Smallwood during the whole war of the Revolution with England. This Military lot #284 was sold to McNichols to Samuel Bratt, May 26, 1852 as recorded in Deed Book 10 page 302 in Allegany County, Maryland.
Dudley Lee never applied for a Federal Pension or claimed his Federal Bounty land. Dudley’s bounty land #2445 of 100 acres was awarded to Isaac McNichols on May 8, 1850. This land was awarded to McNichols on the basis that he was the only surviving heir, a nephew, of Dudley. The name of the parents of Isaac McNichols was never shown.
The DAR records mentioned that Dudley Lee married Margaret Fetters White on January 5, 1792. This could not be, as Dudley's wife Judith was still alive to sign the deed to Reid in 1797. Surely that date would be at least 1798. These same DAR records say Margaret was born July 1, 1772 in Frederick County and died September 15, 1839.
Page 10
(continuation of information-Dorothy Lee Jones )
In the 1800 Census Dudley is listed as the head of a household in the 45th District in Allegany County, Maryland. The 45th District, was Ryan 's Glade, one of the treeless meadows, drained by Glade Run, between the Great Backbone Mountain and the North Branch of the Potomac. It was on the noted McCullough Packhorse Path, which crossed the Potomac from Virginia (West) near the mouth of Glade Run, passed near the present Oak Grove Church, skirting the Glade, thence over Backbone through the Great Glades south of Oakland into (West) Virginia, east of Cranesville. Ryan’s Glade was a land of plenty with its abundance of game and berries. From the meadows they could harvest good crops of hay and grain. There were big groves of maple trees that provided the sugar and syrup they needed. Dudley's neighbors in Ryan's Glade were households headed by Margaret, David and Steven Titchenall, John Irons, Henry, Joseph and Adam White.
Brumbaugh’s Maryland Record records in 1811 the Treasurer of the Western Shore was to "pay to Dudley Lee half pay of a soldier, as remuneration for services rendered his country in the Revolutionary War, and as a relief from the indigence and misery which attends old age." He was 52 years old.
The Mt. Democrat of February 11, 1937 states that Dudley Lee settled the Noah Harvey farm near the White Church where he died April 10, 1815 and was buried on the far northeast of his pioneer log house. The grave is unmarked. I can find no record of any property owned by Dudley Lee in Allegany/Garrett County except for Military Lot #301. There are no recorded wills for Dudley Lee. It is my understanding the common practice not to deed land even though it is handed down through the generations. Perhaps their land was in the name of White and was inherited by one or more of her children, which I have not checked.
Brumbaugh’s Maryland Record records the Treasurer of the Western Shore was authorized by the 1838 Maryland Legislature to pay Margaret Lee, widow of Dudley Lee, half pay of a private during her life, as a further remuneration for his services during the Revolutionary War.
On September 15, 1839 Margaret Fetters Lee died and was buried at Beech Run Cemetery four miles north of Albright in Preston County, (West) Virginia.* Her tombstone, erected by C. C. Lee, is clear and easy to read. Margaret apparently lived with one of her daughters at the time of her death. At least three of Dudley and Margaret's daughters lived at Beech Run in 1850. Katherine, wife of Michael Sypolt, Judith, wife of James Tichenell and Rebecca Lee.
"Genealogy and Other Records of Grant and Pleasant Districts In Preston County" by Edward Thorpe King records information on the Beech Run Church (no longer in existence) and cemetery which is still used. The cemetery is well maintained. Mr. King’s book relates such things as the Tichnells, Sypolts and some Lee attended Class #1 while Catherine Sypolt and Rebecca Lee attended Class #2. The book also records the names of people buried in the cemetery.
Page 14
I somehow cannot believe there were 20 children, unless some of these were Margarets. For instance, there is no record of a Thornton Brooks Lee in the War of 1812. I have checked the Military and Pension Records. Could it be that his name was Thornton Brooks White? I did not look for that. I do remember seeing the name Thornton in the book on the Whites. On the other hand, Nicholas son of Dudley did have a son he named Thornton Brooks Lee.
DAR Lineage per #53789 Helen Elise Garland Iists the children of Dudley Lee as:
Levi — born 12/24/1792 — Died in infancy.
Sallie — born 5/20/1794 — Married James Strahan

I will comment on some of these dates under the individual chapters.

Jacob Lee and His Descendants
1. Jacob Lee, son of Dudley Lee I and Judy Guevarra, was a soldier in the War of 1812. He resided near Red House. From the Pension Files of the War of 1812 we find Jacob Lee married Eva Moon October 25, 1815. They were married by Rev. W. Wilson, a Methodist Minister, eight miles east of Oakland, Maryland. Eva was born in 1800. Jacob Lee was drafted in Allegany County, Maryland and discharged at Baltimore. He served in Captain McLaughlin’s
Maryland Militia from August 11, 1814 to October 12, 1814. Jacob Lee died December 3, 1827 near Oakland. Jacob never applied for the bounty land he was entitled but his wife Eva did. She was granted 80 acres in June 1854. Thomas and Rebecca Moon filed certificates re death of the soldier, Jacob. Eva had inherited 159 acres of land from the estate of Jacob Moon which William Moon contested through the Circuit Court. Thomas Moon was listed as the defendant. The land was recorded in Eva 's name on October 26, 1868 in Allegany County. Eva Lee died in 1883. (Thomas Moon was born in 1797).

Frederick Lee and His Descendants
5. Frederick Lee, son of Dudley Lee and Judith Guevarra, was born 1790 according to the census of 1850 and also information from Mrs. Friend; he was born in 1796 according to the census of 1860; and he was born in 1800 according to a date that was submitted to the DAR (see Dudley Lee Chapter). He received a pension from the War of 1812 for the years 1867, 1868, 1869, and 1870 as recorded at the Maryland Hall of Records under the records for Allegany County. The 1860 census has him living in Oakland, Maryland. It lists Frederick 64, as a laborer, Sarah 53, Nancy 27, Henry 23, Julia 13 and Eliza 9. Nearby lives George S. Lee 34, laborer, Julia 25, Hester 5, Elijah 2, and Jane 7/12. Next to them lives Elisha Harvey 51 and his wife, Hester 48. Frederick died 7/19/1870.
Frederick evidently came to Ryan’s Glade as a boy when his father moved in 1798 or 1799. His first marriage was to Mary Ann Lady on 6/1/1816. They had three children. He also married Sarah Irons on 12/28/1823. This is listed in a book by Rev. William Welsh of marriages that he performed during the period 1816 - 1867. Another record of marriages shows that Frederick Lee married Sarah Arnold, 9/23/1823. The closeness of these dates, 9/23/1823 -
12/28/1823, and the fact that these wives had the same first name and similar sounding last names, makes the probability of an error here seems high. Frederick Lee’s marriage to Sarah Irons also listed in Hoye's article on the Irons Family. Mrs. Friend has information that Frederick Lee was married three times and that there was one child, Kit, who was a child of Sarah Arnold and Frederick Lee. Hoye’s article on the Irons Family has been copied in its entirety which you can find after the children of Frederick Lee and Sarah Irons.

Garrett County History of Pioneer Families
By Chas. E. Hoye
The Irons Family
John Irons appears to have settled in what is now Garrett County, in 1799. In the Census of 1800 he was listed as a young married man with one child, residing in the Ryans Glade’s settlement, as a neighbor of Adam, Joseph, Henry and William White. The Whites came from Frederick Co., MD. and it is probable that young Irons came with them from Frederick.
Our John Irons may have been a son of the John Iron, who was listed in the census of Frederick County in 1790, as head of a family of eleven. This Irons family was probably descended from Simon Irons who came from Virginia to Maryland in the sixteen-seventies. A Thomas Irons resided in York. Co., PA., from 1770 -1783, and in 1824 Thomas Irons, Sr., deeded to Thomas Irons, Jr., “Mt Clair,” 132 acres on Evitts Mountain, near Cumberland, MD., where the senior Irons then resided.
In 1804 John Irons surveyed “Pretty Spring” 134 acres, “beginning at a white oak on the north side of a spring which falls into Locust Run.” Here he made his home and prospered. He is said to have kept a tavern as well as to have developed a large farm, but, since his place was off of the main highway, and McCullough”s Path was going out of use before 1800, we cannot understand how guests could have reached his tavern except the Ryan’s Glade people.
The Irons farm was on the highland above the present village of Steyer, in the “Big Bend” of the Potomac. John Irons, Sr., built a log house here; his son John, later built a hewed log house north of his father”s cabin, which was about fourth of a mile east of the present Steyer house.
John Irons, Sr., probably his wife and others are buried in the old family graveyard on the homestead, but the graves are unmarked. The remains of a Native American camp were found on this farm–arrows, flint chips, stone tomahawks, and graves containing Native American relics; it was on or near the Great Warrior Path, later known as McCullough’s path.
In 1828 John Irons patented “Cistern,” 214 acres, and in 1890 he bought of John Hoye part of “White’s Hospitality,” 100 acres. In 1848 John Irons, “yeoman”, and his wife, Mary, deeded to their son, John Irons, then of Marion Co., VA., all their real estate, consisting of447 acres, on condition that John should support his parents during their lives and that he pay $1807 to the other heirs of John Irons.

In 1857, John and Margaret Irons sold the Irons homestead to John George Steyer and moved to the State of Iowa. *
An old Allegany County Court case records that Edward Irons in 1789 owed Peter Devecomon, a merchant in Western Port, for a 60 gallon still $9; “a horse creature" $20, etc., total $35. Irons was credited with a stack of hay and labor $12:6:9. In 1792 Irons confessed judgment. ($ substituted for English pounds)
*(Author's note: Joseph Irons visited Maryland in 1891 as evidenced by correspondence between Irons and his nephew, George Smith Lee. He mentioned several members of the Irons family.)

Levi Lee wrote another letter to his brother George S. Lee on 1/28/1883 from Pontiac, Livingston County, Illinois, He gave information on his family and that he had bought some more land near Pontiac, Illinois. The author has written a letter to each of the 19 Lee households listed in the POntiac, Illinois phone book of 1979 to inquire whether they were descendants of Levi. Of four respondents, none were related to Levi Lee.

Dear Brother and Sister we received your letter yesterday dated the 14 of Dec. I will give you our Post Office address the first thing, it is Pontiac Livingston County Ill. Your letter come to the office in Graymond ? and laid their 2 or 3 weeks before we got it. We got the answer you wrote to that letter I rote on Easter Sunday and neglected to answer it. Axcuse mee and I will try to answer all you write after this. We was glad to here from you once more and glad that you wife is cured of the dropsy and I think it is most time for you to quit finding little boys. Now you have got to bee grandpaw and granmaw. We and our children are well when I heard from them last.Ellen lives 40 miles from here? She has four children, 2 girls and 2 boys. I will tell you Ellen children names, Minnie, Jane and Mary Katherine, John Lee and George Edward.
Charleys has 3 boys. Their names is short, the oldest is Pessa, the next George, and the third is Lewis. George has only one, his name is Eliza. He will bee 6 years olde in June. Now I will tell you we have a colde wet spring verry colde May. People was late getting their corn planted on account of the wet colde weather. It contuined wet until September. There was a powerful crop of oats raised last year but there was two much rane to save it all. The colde weather made corn a month behind time this fall. The frost about the 21 of September hurt a gratest of corn? Corn crop last year woulden average the 26 of Nov. that night it snowed a snow 6 inches deep that laid on till the present, a good sleighing snow now. We have had some pretty colde weather the week past it was 21 below zero. I will give you a sketch of the markets, oats 32 cents per bushel, corn 40 cents per bus., flour from 5 to 6 dollars per barrel, potatoes from 50 to 60 cents per bushel, hogs from 5 to 75 and 6 cents per pound, butter 25 cents per pound, eggs 25 cents per dozen, good horses and mules is a good price? Charley sold a span of mules last week for three hundred dollars cash, he has another span of mules smaller woth 2 hundred, 2 brud mares, one 3 years olde colte and one yearling colte. George has 1 span of coalts 3 years olde this spring; one broode mare. I have one young mare, 5 head of cows, 6 head of hogs is all the stalk I have and that is all I want to take care of such colde weather as last week. Now I will tell you I bought another farm of 80 achers for 35 dollars per acher. Bought it 11 of July. In less than 2 months I could solde it for 40 dllars per acher. It is 5 miles from Pontiac, the County seat of Livingston County. It has a story and half house, a good stone foundation, a good 6 horse stable, ouble cribs, 2 goodwheels, a young orchard beginning to bare, a garden, paled year dam. Oarchard fenced with postes and plank, 5 achors or pasture fenced with plank. One mile of good hedge fence on it. The house closte the rode and a forty on each side of the rode. I have rented that to George and the one I live on to Charley. Now the buying part is nothing. I supose you would like to know something about the paying part. The one we live on is every dollar paid clare of all debt. I have 13 hundred dollars paid on the other by borrowing 4 hundred and 25 of George Lee. I have 5 year to pay the rest in payments of 7 per cent intrust.

George Smith Lee
5.6 George Smith Lee was probably born in Ryan’s Glade on 8/14/1826. He also had probably lived in WV as his son, Frank Lee, remembered crossing the Cheat River when they moved to the North Glades. He bought land in the North Glades on three different occasions, the first being in 1885 when he was 59 years old.
George Smith Lee married Julia Ann Harvey on May 4, 1854. Julia Ann Harvey was born June 15, 1834. She was the oldest daughter of Elisha Harvey and Hester Ann Wilson Harvey. Julia Ann died 3/29/1891. An extensive genealogy of the Harvey Family has been assembled by Marshall G. Brown, Severna Park, MD. Julia’s ancestry is provided in a chart below.
The author and editor have transcribed (keeping spelling and punctuation intact to the extent possible) three letters written to George Smith Lee and one written to him by his daughter, Jane Lee Moon (5.6.4). One such letter was written to him by his brother, Levi Lee (5.3), from Livingston County, IL, dated 1/28/1883, which advised him that it was time for him to “quit finding little boys” and he should now become a grandpaw. George Lee’s last son Josephus (5.6.11) had been born in 1882, when George was 56 and Julia was 48. The letters from Levi are presented where his family is discussed. A letter to George Smith Lee from his uncle Joseph Irons is presented below.

Life was harsh in the North Glades in the late 1800’s. Family stories passed down through Jane Angeline Lee Moon tell that Julia An Harvey Lee did not like living there because it was so remote and sparsely populated. Disease was a paramount concern. Correspondence between George S. Lee and his daughter, Jane Angeline Lee Moon dwelled on diseases going around and discussed the advisability of visiting when illness was spreading. Such a letter follows.

Elisha Frank Lee
5.6.9 Elisha Frank Lee was born on January 8, 1872. He was the ninth child of George S. Lee and Julia Ann Harvey Lee who were 45 and 37 years old respectively at the time. HIs mother’s ancestors have been recorded in great detail in the book “Genealogy of the Harvey Family of Garrett County, Maryland.” by Marshall G. Brown. His book traces the Harvey family back to the 1700’s.
Elisha Frank Lee said that his family moved to the North Glade farm when he was 8 years old (1880). He remembers crossing the Cheat River when moving, which would have placed the family in West Virginia at that time. The purchase of land in the North Glades, Garrett County, MD by his father, George S. Lee was not recorded until 1885.
In 1891, when Elisha Frank Lee was 19, he lost his mother, an older brother and sister, within a two month period. We have secured a poignant letter written at that time by his older brother George Statton Lee who was still at home to an older sister Jane Angeline Lee Moon who had a family of her own. It is transcribed below, keeping spelling and punctuation intact to the extent possible.
Dear Brother and Sister Feb 23/91
I thought I would drop you a few lines to let you no how we all are. Mother is a bought the same. Amos is a bought as bad as he can be. We have bin ever since Saturday trying to get a Doctor. Sam Wilt was down to Piepont 2 for Dr. Parsons but couldent git him and he brought Doctor Miller and he never give him one dose of medicine and he said it was to far from town for him to take the case.
I am going to Oakland for Dr. Peroman now. It is after 12 Oclock now and I am going to start right a way. the rest of us is as well as common.
Yours Truly
Statton G. Lee
It is ironic that 14 year old Amos mentioned in the letter subsequently recovered, but 23 year old George Statton who wrote the letter succumbed within 2 months.
Page 44
On December 23, 1896 Elisha Frank Lee married 17 year old Laura Rebecca Murphy. The Reverend John Davis performed the ceremony. He had performed the ceremony at the wedding of Laura’s parents on October 11, 1875, and he would do the same for Elisha Frank Lee’s oldest daughter Julia Ellen Lee on 6/24/1914.
It is very likely that the newlyweds immediately took up residence at Elish Frank Lee’s home in the North Glade. We know from the 1900 Census that some of Elisha Frank Lee’s brothers and sisters were living there also. In about one year Frank and Laura’s first child arrived on November 17,1897, the day before Laura’s 18th birthday. Elisha Frank Lee was 25.
Elisha Frank Lee and Laura Rebecca Murphy Lee were still living on the farm when Laura died on March 10, 1934 at the age of 54. She died of dropsy, now commonly called congestive heart failure. Elisha Frank Lee was 62. His youngest son, Lester, who was then 17,
worked on the farm with his father until he was drafted into the army during World War II.
Elisha Frank Lee stayed on the farm until about 1946, when at the age of about 75, he went to
live with his daughter Bertha Lee Wilt. He later stayed in the homes of his sons, Elmer Lee and
Charles Lee. He died of a stroke in 1963 at the age of 91 at the home of his son, Charles Lee.
Until shortly before his death his mind was sharp and active. He was fond of giving brain
teasers to his visitors. He would tantalize his descendants with stories of his ancestry. He claimed relation to the famous Revolutionary War General Light-Horse Harry Lee and to the Black Foot Indian tribe. Details, however, were sparse.
Page 45
Laura Rebecca Murphy Lee and Her Ancestors, Brothers and Sisters 15
Laura Rebecca Murphy Lee lived from November 16, 1879 to March 10, 1934. She was the daughter of William Henry Murphy and Lucinda Ellen Murphy. On December 23, 1896, Elisha Frank Lee and Laura Rebecca Murphy were married by Reverend John Davis. She was only 17 when she married.
The Census records of 1880 show that the William H. Murphy family lived in the Elk Garden District of Mineral County, WV. William H. Murphy was born about 1840.
On October 11, 1875, William Henry Murphy and Lucinda Ellen Murphy were married by a Reverend John Davis (the same person who 21 years later would conduct the marriage ceremony of their daughter, Laura and in 1914 would conduct the marriage ceremony of their
granddaughter, Julia Ellen Lee Warnick). In 1880, they resided with Lucinda Ellen’s parents,
James A. and Mary A. Streets Murphy. (Note that Lucinda Ellen’s maiden name and her married
name was Murphy).
No information on the parents of William Henry Murphy has been found. Family members report that William Henry Murphy fought in the Civil War on the side of the Confederacy. Upon attempting to verify this, it was learned from the records at the National Archives in Washington, D.C., that seven William H. Murphy served for the State of Virginia in the Civil War. Which one, if any, is the person of interest here has not been determined.
The following is a list of the children of William Henry and Lucinda Ellen Murphy:

Mary Florence Murphy, 9/14/1876 - 1/17/1959.
Mahala Jane Murphy, 12/21/1877 - 9/1918.

Garrett County History of Pioner Families
By Chas. E. Hoye
The Irons Family

John Irons appears to have settled in What is now Garrett County, in 1799. In the Census of 1800, he was listed as a young married man with one child, residing in the Ryan1s Glade settlement, as a neighbor of Adam, Joseph, Henry and William White. The Whites came from Frederick Co. MD. and it is probable that young Irons came with them from Frederick.
Our John Irons may have been a son of the John Iron, who listed in the cens-.is of Frederick County in 1790, as head of a family of eleven. This Irons was probably descended from Simon Irons who came from Virginia to Maryland in the sixteen-seventies. A Thomas Irons resided in York Co., PA., from 1770 - l 783, and in 1821 Thomas Irons, Sr. deeded to Thomas Irons, Jr., "Mt. Clair" l.32 acres on Evitts Mountain, near Cumberland, MD., where the senior Irons than resided.
In l804 John Irons surveyed “Pretty Soring" 134 acres, "beginning at white oak on the north side of a Spring which falls. into Locust Runn.” Here he made his home and prospered. He is said to have kept a tavern as well as to have developed a large farm, but, since his place was off the main highway, and McCullough’s Path was going out of use before 1800, we cannot understand how guest could have reached his tavern except the Ryan’s Glade people.
The Irons farm was on the highland above the present village of Steyer, in the “Big Bend” of the Potomac. John Irons, sr., built a log house here: his son John, later built a hewed log house north of his father’s cabin, which was about a fourth of a mile east of the present Stayer house.
John Ions, Sr., probably his wife and others are buried in the old family graveyard on the homestead, 'but the graves are unmarked. The remains of an Indian camp were found on this farm-arrows, flint chips, stone tomahawks, and graves containing Indian relics; it was on or near the Great Warrior Path, later known as McCullough’s Path.
In 1828 John Irons patented “Cistern," 214 acres., mid in 1890 he bought of Jorn Hoye part of "White's Hospitality," 100 acres. In l848 John Irons, "yeoman," and his wife Mary, deeded to their son, John Irons, then or Marion Co., VA., all their real estate, consisting of 447 acres, on condition that John should support his parents during their lives and that he pay $1807 to the other heirs of John Irons.

Chapter IV(f)
John Wesley Lee

5.8 John Wesley Lee was born 12/10/1830 at Mountain Lake Park, Maryland. According to Hoye, he served in the 6th w. Va. Regiment during the Civil War. He died 2/27/1913 at Masquese, New Mexico, having been hit by a train according to a news clipping found in the possessions of Elisha Frank Lee. He is buried in Ivanhoe, Oklahoma.
He married Emily Jane White, 9/13/1851. She was the daughter of Bushrod White and Ann Moon White. Emily Jane White was born 6/12/1832 at Mountain Lake Park, Maryland. She died 9/21/1909 and is also buried at Ivanhoe, Oklahoma. Marshall. G. Brown also provides information on this family.
The following information on John Wesley Lee was received from Mrs. Dorothy Lee Jones, New Carrollton, Maryland:
Pension records for John Wesley Lee researched at the National Archives shows that he served in Company O of the 6th w. Va. infantry from October 24, 1861 to June 10, 1865. He suffered from exposure at Fort Pendleton. The original pension claim was made at Mt. Lake Park., Garrett County, Maryland in 1888. He was 5ft. 11in., dark complexion, black hair and hazel eyes. He was captured and paroled April 26, 1863 at Oakland. An interesting tidbit here is something from the recent Garrett County History book: The Confederates rode into Oakland, Maryland at ll:00 a.m. Sunday, April 26, 1863. The Union garrison stationed in the town at the time was Company O of the Sixth West Virginia infantry, locally referred to as the "Groundhog Company was not popular at the time among the residents due to its lack of vigilance and patriotic spirit It was even less popular after the Confederates arrived in town that April Sunday morning. The Confederate raid that Sunday found people at church or out in the fields hunting groundhogs. A Company of 57 men were captured and two Commissioned Officers. They were paroled the same day.

Nicholas J. Lee
There 1s some mystery as to the birth and parentage of Nicholas J. Lee. Best information available indicates Nicholas J. Lee was born April 17, 1831, even though his tombstone reads 1835. Family tradition has his father's name as Gray. John P. Gray who married Margaret Lee in 1835 did leave him $100 in his will. Whether he was a son of Margaret Lee before her marriage or another one of Dudley's daughters cannot be established. However, there is no question of his being accepted as a Lee by that family and a grand son of Dudley Lee. The actual location of his birth place is also unknown but census records reflect it as being in (West) Virginia.
In his teens Nicholas. J. Lee was a farm laborer for Harrison Michael Sypolt and his wife, Catherine Lee Sypolt. On the adjacent farm Rebecca Lee lived with Judith Lee Tichenell and her husband James. Catherine, Judith and Rebecca were sisters of Margaret Lee and all were daughters of Dudley Lee.
These farms were located on Beech Run Hillt a broad angle between lower Muddy Creek and Cheat River. The Beech Run community was first settled in the late l7O0’s, It was first named Pleasant Hills which had a post office but later the name was changed to Beech Run.
Nicholas married Lydia Bower about 1851. Lydia was born August 17, 1832 to Daniel Bower and Elizabeth Albright Bower. Elizabeth was the daughter of Bernard Albright. Elizabeth and Daniel were born in York County, Pennsylvania and came to the Crab Orchard settlement in Preston County about 1825. The Bowers lived at Beech Run Hill when Lydia married Nicholas.
Nicholas joined the Brandonville Methodist Church on September 23, 1853. Later records show Nicholas, Lydia, Rebecca and Catherine all went to church at the Beech Run Church. The summer of' 1855 was known as the "dry summer" with crops dying and streams drying up.
In 1859 a heavy frost came in Junet killing all the wheat in the area. The farmers quickly replanted with potatoes and other staples and thus survived the next winter.
In the early 1870's they moved to an area. known as Oak Grove, about three miles North East of Terra Alta. Oak Grove is one of few groves of giant oak trees left in the area. From 1850 to 1880 the main product in the area were shooks and barrel staves made from the wood of these white oaks.
After the disappearance of the forests the Germans started growing buckwheat in large quant1es. Preston County is still noted for their buckwheat flour and each year a buckwheat festival is celebrated in Kingwood, West Virginia. Cranberries grow 1n the swampy areas,
Page 112
Nicholas and Lydia apparently moved into the oak Grove area because his Uncle Nicholas Lee had moved there with his family in 1865. Rebecca Lee also lived at Oak Grove with her sister Judith Lee Tlchenell,
Nicholas was to remain on the farm he owned the rest of his life. Lydia died of typhoid December 17, 1871 four months after the birth of her tenth child. Nicholas then courted Sevilla Liston and they were married April 10, 1873, She had lived on a nearby farm to the Lees when they lived at Beech Run Hill. Sevilla was born November 20, 1849 to Ebenezer and Rachel Groves Liston.
on January 19, 1885, Nicholas J. Lee, age 52, signed a notarize statement on behalf of a pension claim filed for Christopher c. Lee, son of Nicholas Lee and grandson of Dudley Lee, for his Civil war service.
His sworn statement declared he had known claimant for thirty years, that he knew claimant before his enlistment and knew him after his discharge in 1865. That Christopher lived a mile distant and they frequently exchanged work. Because of the existing family relations Nicholas J. Lee knew of the increasing disability and difficulties, "That he has the foregoing knowledge from personal acquaintance and observation -- is a cousin to complainant.''
Nicholas and Sevilla continued to live at Oak Grove in the Portland District. They attended the Methodist Church at Oak Grove and are burled in the adjacent cemetery. The church was established in 1871, It is now a part of the Americana Museum in Terra Alta. After the death of Nicholas in 1916 Sevilla continued to live with her youngest and only living son. She was known for holding her grandchildren on her lap and cover them with her Arron as she told them stories. The farm was sold and the family moved to Terra Alta. when Sevilla died July 30, 1941 her funeral was held in the oak Grove Church and she was buried in the cemetery beside Nicholas and Lydia.
